<p>En 1979, <a href="https://www.vw.com/en.html" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.vw.com/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VW présente aux USA</a> une version pick-up de la <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/culture/volkswagen_rabbit" data-type="link" data-id="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/culture/volkswagen_rabbit" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rabbit</a>. Développée et fabriquée sur place dans l&rsquo;usine de Westmoreland en Pennsylvanie, cette nouvelle silhouette reprend l&rsquo;avant de la Rabbit ainsi que ses motorisations essence et diesel. Elle prend le nom de&#8230; Pickup.</p>

<p>L&#8217;empattement augmente de 22 cm et la longueur totale passe à 4,34 m (contre 3,94 m pour la Rabbit). La benne est de grande dimension (1,31 m de large) et l&rsquo;essieu arrière est spécifique au Pick-up.</p>

<p>La commercialisation du Pickup est effective en 1980. De nombreuses finitions sont proposées avec, notamment, une version Sportruck dont le design est inspiré par la GTI&#8230; Les ventes sont au beau fixe et près de 40000 exemplaires sont vendus cette année-là.</p>

<p>Après un début en fanfare, les ventes chutes rapidement et VW USA prend la décision de stopper la fabrication du Pickup en 1983. 75947 exemplaires ont été assemblés dans l&rsquo;usine de Westmoreland.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Le Pickup traverse l&rsquo;Atlantique et devient&#8230; Caddy</h4>



<p>Les outillages permettant de fabriquer le Pickup sont alors transféré en Yougoslavie et en Afrique du Sud. Le Pickup renait sous le nom de Volkswagen Caddy (il prendra le nom de Golf Pick-up en France).</p>

<p>Si le nom de Volkswagen Rabbit est bien connu en France, c’est parce qu’il fait référence aux dernières Golf de la première génération commercialisées dans notre pays en 1983. </p>



<p>Pourtant, ce nom est apparu bien plus tôt, en 1975&nbsp;! C’est en effet cette année-là que <a href="https://www.vw.com/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Volkswagen commercialise aux USA</a> la Golf sous ce nom de Rabbit.</p>



<p>C&rsquo;est pour éviter toute confusion avec le nom du pétrolier Gulf (le célèbre sponsor des <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/?s=porsche" data-type="link" data-id="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/?s=porsche" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Porsche</a> 917 du Mans) que Volkswagen choisit de dénommer ainsi sa Golf. Après la Beetle (nom de la Coccinelle aux US), voici donc la Rabbit !</p>

<p>Assemblée en Allemagne, la voiture est dans un premier temps mise aux normes US avec des pare-chocs plus volumineux et des catadioptres latéraux. Elle est disponible en versions 3 et 5 portes avec un moteur de 1471 cm3.</p>

<p>En 1978, la Rabbit est assemblée sur place, dans une usine basée à Westmoreland en Pennsylvanie. Les phares changent alors de forme et deviennent carrés (en dehors de versions diesel qui restent assemblées en Allemagne et conservent leurs feux ronds).</p>

<p>En 1979, la Rabbit est profondément modifiée avec une face avant totalement remaniée, une nouvelle planche de bord et des suspensions plus souples. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">De nouvelles déclinaisons en 1980</h4>



<p>VW USA commercialise également une version pick-up qui est assemblée sur place. </p>

<p>L’année d’après, le cabriolet et la Jetta enrichissent la gamme. Tout comme la version diesel, ces deux modèles sont assemblés en Allemagne et importés aux US.</p>

<p>La production de la Rabbit prend fin en mai 1984. Comme en Europe, seule la version cabriolet de la Golf Mk1 -sous le nom de VW Cabriolet &#8211; poursuit sa carrière en Amérique du Nord. La Rabbit GTI n&rsquo;a connu qu&rsquo;un succès limité et a été fabriquée à près de 55000 exemplaires.</p>

<p>La Golf Mk2 &#8211; qui cette fois-ci prend le nom de Golf en Amérique du Nord &#8211; est à son tour assemblée dans l&rsquo;usine américaine de Westmoreland. Malheureusement, le succès n&rsquo;est pas au rendez-vous et l&rsquo;usine fermera définitivement ses portes en 1988. Les versions américaines de la Golf seront désormais assemblées au Mexique, à Puebla !</p>
