<p><em>2.3 EcoBoost et 280 ch, 420 Nm de couple, 0 à 100 km/h en 5,7 secondes&#8230; Sur le papier, la nouvelle Ford Focus ST n’est pas là pour rigoler. Mais elle doit aussi assurer un rôle de familiale, en témoignent ses déclinaisons SW et diesel. Vraie sportive ou ersatz de Focus RS ? Bien éduquée ou brute à redouter ? Pour trancher, rien de mieux qu’une session piSTe !</em></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Design de la Focus ST : trop polie pour être bombinette ?</h2>

<p>Notre session d’essai se déroulait parallèlement aux essais du pick-up Ranger Raptor. À côté de ce bestiau charismatique, il n’y avait que la couleur Orange Fury de la nouvelle Focus ST pour capter notre regard et notre attention. Il faut dire que si elle reprend la bonne base de la Focus ordinaire et son joli regard full-LED, cette version encanaillée ne fait pas trop dans l’exubérance.</p>

<p>On pourrait la prendre pour une sage Focus ST-Line, cette nouvelle bombinette. Pourtant, divers éléments nous mettent la puce à l’oreille, en dehors des badges rouges ST. Large calandre noire en nid d&rsquo;abeille, inserts gris mat dans le pare-chocs avant, extracteur arrière couleur carrosserie, becquet arrière sport, deux sorties d’échappement spécifiques, étriers de freins rouge, jantes alliage 19 »… Vous avez dit subtilité ?</p>

<p>Alors oui, elle est jolie, mais le public visé ne veut-il pas un peu plus de folie ? Un peu plus de signes extérieurs mettant en exergue la puissance disponible sous le capot ? Ou bien s’adresse-t-elle tout simplement à des gens qui ont bon goût ? Après tout, les vrais savent…</p>

<p>À l&rsquo;intérieur aussi, la sportivité s&rsquo;exprime par touches. Pédalier, pommeau de levier de vitesse et plaques de seuil se parent d&rsquo;aluminium et du cuir surpiqué habille le volant à méplat et le bas de la console centrale. La plus grande différence avec une Focus lambda, ce sont les sièges ! L’accueil réservé par les baquets Recaro, à réglages électriques et chauffants, est plus que cordial. Ils nous invitent à nous mettre à l’aise, chose aisée. D’un confort satisfaisant, ils devraient accueillir sans souci une grande variété de gabarits dans de dignes conditions.</p>

<p>Plutôt longue sur son segment (4,39 m), la Focus ST se montre généreuse à l’arrière. Encore plus dans ces conditions « circuit » où le conducteur est amené à conduire plus proche du volant que lors des trajets quotidiens. Hors des pistes et avec sa famille à bord, cette polyvalence est un atout pour ceux qui veulent le beurre, l&rsquo;argent du beurre et plein de place pour les y caser.</p>

<p>Si ce n’était pas assez, la Focus ST SW qui était présente à la Ferté Gaucher nous a également tapé dans l’œil, peut-être plus encore que la « hatchback ». Un break sportif, ça fait tout de suite plus déluré, plus osé, allez savoir…</p>

<p>Nous nous lançons sur la piste pour nous échauffer et apprendre à connaître la voiture. La sonorité se montre d’emblée agréable, pas trop envahissante mais expressive à mesure que l’aiguille du compte-tours grimpe.</p>



<p>Même en mode normal, utilisé pendant la première partie des essais, l’embrayage et l’accélérateur nous demandent de jouer avec eux. Fermement, même. Mais c’est d’abord l’agilité que nous sommes amenés à juger, sur cette première piste plus sinueuse que rapide. Et pas de mystère, la Focus ST ne fait pas honte à ses aînées. </p>

<p>La direction n’est pas ce qu’il y a de plus ferme. Elle suit la tendance de ce qui est proposé sur la Focus ordinaire, qui se montre un peu plus douce. Pour autant, la Focus ST répond au doigt et à l’œil. Le poids de la compacte (1 508 kg) ne se sent pas trop lorsqu’on le balance vers l&rsquo;avant ou sur le côté, en freinage appuyé ou en courbe. Pas joueuse ? Si. Mais l’électronique et le différentiel à glissement limité électronique veillent au grain et nous assistent pour nous permettre de nous amuser sans nous offrir le risque mettre dans le décor. Facile à conduire, elle flatte donc notre ego et ménage ses passagers : sa suspension performance active n&rsquo;est pas seulement là pour l&rsquo;efficacité mais garantit un confort étonnant (en tout cas sur une piste bien lisse&#8230;) !</p>

<p>Notre deuxième session nous offre plus d’espace, pour aller plus vite et plus fort. C’est aussi l’occasion de passer en mode « track » et de désactiver les systèmes électroniques comme l’ESP. Ou plutôt de les mettre en veille : ils gardent un œil ouvert et n’hésitent pas à rattraper une situation mal engagée. Ce qui fut le cas en freinant trop tard et en tournant trop tôt à l’approche d’une courbe sous-estimée. Le visage aussi vert que le gazon qui était censé nous accueillir sans avoir même eu le temps de préparer ballons et banderoles, nous attendons la sortie de piste… qui ne viendra finalement pas. La Focus ST pardonne les excès d’optimisme (voire les encourage !), un plus pour les pilotes du dimanche qui ont perdu l’habitude d’arsouiller sur route ouverte, sécurité routière oblige.</p>

<p>Profiter de la musique du moteur, c&rsquo;est bien. Mais en parlant de musique, les disques arrivent-ils à suivre ? Oui, le freinage ne pose aucun problème et la pédale n&rsquo;est ni trop sensible, ni trop molle. Même lancé à 170 km/h, les freins acceptent d’être mordus à pleines dents pour ralentir la tonne et demie de la sportive dans les délais impartis. Nous avons d&rsquo;ailleurs souvenir d&rsquo;un essai sur le même circuit avec la génération précédente de Focus ST. Dans les mêmes conditions d&rsquo;essai, donc, la fumée qui s&rsquo;échappait des roues ne laissait aucun doute sur les limites de leur endurance. Sur cette nouvelle Focus ST, pas de fumée et une tenue constante. Osera-t-on faire un raccourci et affirmer que sur ce point, la nouvelle mouture est mieux ? Bien entendu !</p>

<p>Histoire de voir si les 10 450 euros supplémentaires sont justifiés par rapport à une amusante Fiesta ST, nous prenons le volant de cette dernière. Si les sensations sont bien là, malgré la puissance moindre de 80 ch mais grâce à la légèreté et la vivacité de l’auto, c’est le freinage qui nous modère par rapport à sa grande sœur. L’insonorisation est également plus légère et l’esprit est un peu moins filtré. Mais elle ne démérite pas, avec un 0 à 100 abattu en 0,8 secondes de plus que sa grande soeur (6,5 contre 5,7). Quand bien même, outre l’habitabilité et le confort inférieurs de la Fiesta ST, la qualité des matériaux employés ou le niveau d’équipements, la Focus ST met plus en confiance et se veut plus rassurante. <p><strong>Face à sa concurrence</strong> :<br>La Focus ST peut sembler bien placée en termes de prix face à ses principales concurrentes. Seulement, à partir du 1er janvier 2020, elle écopera, avec ses rejets de CO2 de 179 g/km, du <strong>malus maximal de 12 500 euros&nbsp;(7 073&nbsp;actuellement)</strong>, qui descendra à 4 026 € à partir du 1er juin avec la nouvelle grille basée sur les données WLTP. Ses concurrentes font en tout cas mieux voire beaucoup mieux. Nous avons indiqué leur malus entre parenthèses (malus 2019 / malus 2020 jusqu&rsquo;au 31 mai) :</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Moteur, action !</h4>



<p>En lisant l&rsquo;introduction, vous pourriez croire qu&rsquo;un V8 de 5.0l allait faire son apparition sous le capot de la Focus : coupons court toute suite à tout fantasme, il n&rsquo;en est rien !</p>



<p>La Focus ST n&rsquo;hérite en effet pas du big block américain mais plutôt du 4 cylindres 2.3l Ecoboost, également présent sous le long capot du coupé emblématique de la marque, dans une version légèrement moins puissante puisqu&rsquo;il est ici question de 280 ch contre 290 sur la Mustang.</p>



<p>Tout cela commence à devenir très sérieux ! L&rsquo;ancienne mouture de Focus ST disposait « seulement » d&rsquo;un 2.0l de 250 ch, le gain est donc substantiel et replace la Focus ST dans la compétition des compactes sportives qui oppose notamment les Peugeot 308 GTi (263 ch), Renault Mégane RS (280ch ou 300ch en version Trophy), Volkswagen Golf GTI ( 265ch en version Clubsport et 290ch pour la TCR) ou encore Honda Civic Type R (320 ch).</p>



<p>Ce nouveau moteur délivre toute sa puissance à 5500 tr/min et son couple maximum de 420 Nm (+60 Nm par rapport à l&rsquo;ancienne Focus ST) entre 3000 et 4000 tr/min. Des chiffres intéressants, qui permettent d&rsquo;annoncer un 0 à 100 km/h effectué en moins de 6 secondes.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Dans la technique<br></h4>



<p>Le nouveau bloc ecoboost dispose « d&rsquo;un turbo à double entrée à faible inertie optimisant l&rsquo;ensemble des flux thermodynamiques pour réduire les interférences des gaz résiduels et ainsi améliorer la réactivité du moteur ainsi que d&rsquo;un système anti-lag ». Soit.</p>



<p>Comme sur la précédente génération, la Focus ST 2019 sera également disponible avec un bloc diesel, toujours beaucoup moins puissant que son homologue carburant au sans-plomb. Avec 190 ch à 3500 tr/min et 400 Nm de couple entre 2000 et 3000 tr/min, il reste néanmoins moteur diesel le plus puissant jamais proposé sur une Focus.</p>



<p>En plus de ces nouveaux moteurs, la Focus ST adopte une nouvelle boite automatique à 7 rapports et palettes au volant, dérivée de la version 8 vitesses équipant <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/essais/essai-ford-focus-iv-titanium-15l-tdci-bva8-le-futur-cest-maintenant/">les versions plus sages</a> de la compacte. De série, la Focus ST sera toujours proposée avec une transmission manuelle à 6 rapports, associée à un système Rev-Match facilitant les rétrogradages (talon-pointe automatique, sur motorisation essence uniquement)</p>



<p>Un Différentiel à Glissement Limité fait également son apparition (en série sur l&rsquo;Ecoboost), ainsi qu&rsquo;un sélecteur de modes de conduite agissant sur la direction, la cartographie de pédale d&rsquo;accélérateur, l&rsquo;ESP, le DGL, la sonorité artificielle du moteur et, plus étonnant, sur la climatisation !</p>



<p>Les suspensions actives optionnelles peuvent également être commandées via les différents modes, mais ces dernières ne seront disponibles que sur la carrosserie 5 portes. La nouvelle Focus ST pourra en effet être aussi commandée en déclinaison <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/actualites/ford-focus-sw-active-2019-la-focus-en-habits-de-randonneuse/">break</a>.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Le point design</h4>



<p>Au chapitre du style, la quasi totalité des éléments de design sont repris de la finition ST-Line, avec toutefois quelques petites nouveautés comme une calandre légèrement redessinée ou encore de nouvelles jantes 19 pouces (chaussées en Michelin Pilot Sport 4S), ainsi que deux nouveaux coloris ( Bleu Ford Performance et Orange Fury ). A l&rsquo;intérieur, des baquets Recaro renforcent l&rsquo;ambiance sportive, de même que le pédalier en aluminium.</p>

<p>La nouvelle Focus ST dipose des mêmes équipements technologiques que le reste de la gamme, comme le régulateur adaptatif, l&rsquo;afficheur tête haute, l&rsquo;aide au maintien dans la voie, les phares full led adaptatifs ou encore le système de reconnaissance des panneaux.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Encore un peu de patience</h4>



<p>Les tarifs ne sont pas encore annoncés, mais la Focus ST sera disponible en concession cet été. N&rsquo;espérez pas la voir au Salon de Genève en Mars, Ford ayant fait l&rsquo;impasse sur le rendez-vous helvétique. Il faudra tabler sur un malus assez élevé malheureusement, les premiers chiffres dévoilés concernant les émissions de CO2 laissent entrevoir une taxe comprise entre 6053€ et 8173€ pour les versions 2.3 Ecoboost (70€ pour le 2.0l diesel). Oui, ça fait mal.</p>
