<p><em>Depuis le Rallye de Monte Carlo, le pilote français <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/culture/rencontre-en-video-avec-sebastien-ogier-pilote-citroen-en-wrc/"><strong>Sébastien Ogier est de retour dans le baquet d&rsquo;une Citroën</strong></a>. Plus précisément, de la C3 WRC, la bombinette aux chevrons qui sillonne le monde depuis 2017. Elle a jusqu&rsquo;à présent glané 4 succès : 2 en 2017, 1 en 2018, et déjà 1 en 2019 avec Ogier, vainqueur à Monaco. Est-ce le prélude d&rsquo;une saison réussie ? Pour cela, découvrons quelques des secrets de cette C3 WRC.</em></p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Une C3 de 380 ch et 4 roues motrices !</h3>



<p>L&rsquo;histoire d&rsquo;une C3 WRC commence d&rsquo;abord par une&#8230; C3. Produite à Trnava, l&rsquo;usine slovaque de PSA, la future voiture de rallye est avant tout dérivée d&rsquo;une voiture de série. Elle en reprend la coque, en sortie de ferrage, puis est directement envoyée à Satory, dans les bureaux de PSA Motorsport. Sur place, ce sont les équipes de Citroën Racing qui la réceptionnent et lui font subir sa cure de transformation. <em>« La principale modification est l&rsquo;arceau cage qui est soudé à la coque »</em>, explique Josselyn Gal, ingénieur d&rsquo;exploitation de la voiture.<em> « Les modifications de structure sont pensées pour la sécurité de l&rsquo;équipage mais la caisse rigidifiée profite aussi aux performances. »</em></p>

<p>Il n&rsquo;y a bien sûr pas que côté structure que la C3 mute. Le moteur, développé spécifiquement pour la course, contrairement aux blocs moteurs de compétition client. Malgré sa cylindrée, ce n&rsquo;est donc pas un « simple » THP : c&rsquo;est un 1,6 l Turbo en alliage léger d&rsquo;une puissance de 380 ch et 400 Nm (à 4500 tr/min) transmis aux 4 roues motrices. Il s&rsquo;agit d&rsquo;un bloc similaire à celui de la C-Elysée WTCC, victorieuse par trois fois au championnat de tourisme, et qui comporte une bridge d&rsquo;admission du turbo de 36 mm. Sa pression est limitée à 2,5 bar. La boîte de vitesses est séquentielle à 6 rapports, que Sébastien Ogier et son collègue Esapekka Lappi manipulent d&rsquo;une unique palette au volant (on tire pour monter les rapports, on pousse pour les descendre).</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">« Intérieur spartiate, manque de rangements »</h3>



<p>De C3, la voiture n&rsquo;a plus grand chose à bord. Dans l&rsquo;antre du pilote et du copilote, la place est comptée malgré la simplicité des garnitures. Deux baquets, un volant, un manche central (celui du frein à main pour faire pivoter la voiture en virage), et un bandeau de plastique qui rappelle l&rsquo;habitacle d&rsquo;une C3&#8230; mais qui ne fait que le rappeler tant son dessin, sa texture et son matériau en sont loin. On note, au centre, un petit levier à côté du manche pour le changement de vitesse de secours, au cas où la palette hydraulique ne répondrait plus. La direction est à crémaillère hydraulique.</p>

<p>Tout ne peut pas hélas être pris en photo, la voiture devant conserver quelques secrets vis-à-vis de ses concurrentes, les Hyundai i20 WRC et Toyota Yaris WRC. L&rsquo;on ne verra pas le moteur donc. Et, parmi ses entrailles, sachez que la C3 WRC recèle un différentiel avant, un différentiel arrière et un différentiel central, pilotés hydrauliquement et électroniquement. Ainsi, les essieux peuvent tourner à des vitesses différentes selon leur adhérence, réduisant le sous-virage et profitant à la motricité surtout sur surfaces glissantes.</p>



<p>Gelé jusqu&rsquo;au-delà de 2020, le développement de la voiture est donc aux limites de ce que permet le championnat. Josselyn Gal poursuit : <em>« Le règlement technique nous impose une cylindrée d&rsquo;1,6 l et une pression de suralimentation de 2,5 bar dans le compresseur. C&rsquo;est là que le règlement bride les performances moteur. Par rapport à la concurrence, à quelques chevaux près, on est tous au même niveau de performances. Tout se joue alors sur les cartographies, la disponibilité de la puissance et du couple suivant les régimes, ou encore la réponse moteur à l&rsquo;accélération ».</em></p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Coller au sol pour voler vers la victoire</h3>



<p>L&rsquo;autre paramètre de performance est l&rsquo;aérodynamisme. Depuis l&rsquo;entrée vigueur du règlement en 2017, les voitures sont plus exubérantes que jamais : voies élargies, ailerons proéminents, diffuseur arrière : tout est bon pour obtenir de l&rsquo;appui. A l&rsquo;avant, les voitures peuvent donc aller jusqu&rsquo;à 1,875 m, soit 5,5 cm de plus qu&rsquo;à l&rsquo;époque des DS 3 WRC), idem à l&rsquo;arrière. De 3,99 m en série, la C3 passe à 4,128 m en WRC. Qui a dit que le sport faisait maigrir ?</p>

<p>Ces silhouettes sont amener à perdurer encore quelques années, précise Josselyn Gal : <em>« le règlement nous autorise seulement à faire évoluer la voiture par petites touches, ce que l&rsquo;on fait constamment pour essayer d&rsquo;aller optimiser ce qui peut l&rsquo;être. Le règlement est figé jusqu&rsquo;en 2022, et la future réglementation technique est toujours en réflexion ».</em> La carrosserie est percée en de nombreux points : autour des passages de roue pour le refroidissement des freins, dans le châssis aussi pour pouvoir soulever la voiture plus rapidement lors des assistances. Quant à l&rsquo;aileron arrière, à deux plans, il procure un appui aérodynamique nécessaire pour coller la voiture au sol.</p>



<p>Reste que pour des voitures dérivées de la série, les C3 WRC ne dérivent que peu de leur matrice sortie d&rsquo;usine. <em>« Tout ce que vous voyez est spécifique », </em>pointe Josselyn Gal. <em>« Les ouvrants, avec le capot, le hayon, les portières arrière soudées, sont largement modifiés avec la fibre de carbone. Toute la partie supérieure des portes arrière est factice et se démonte pour avoir accès au réservoir</em> [75 litres, NDLR] <em>rapidement, qu&rsquo;on remplit par la vitre. »</em> Pour trouver des pièces de série, c&rsquo;est dans les détails : les serrures sont de série par exemple !</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7 Citroën C3 WRC en activité</h3>



<p>C&rsquo;est le décompte officiel confié par Citroën Racing : 4 châssis pour la course, 2 pour les essais, et 1 pour les démonstrations en définition course, celui présent dans ces lignes badgé N°2. Tout est d&rsquo;ailleurs là aussi limité par le règlement : une seule coque par saison sauf accident, et pas plus de 3 moteurs autorisés pour la C3 WRC. Tout est donc optimisé pour une solide fiabilité, qui doit convenir à tous les terrains : si les essieux et le bouclier peuvent changer entre les épreuves, la voiture doit être la même pour toutes les surfaces, neige comprise.<em> « Même si le championnat a une composante plus typée terre qu&rsquo;asphalte, pour gagner le titre il faut être bon partout »</em>, dit Josselyn Gal, qui ajoute : « <em>De la feuille blanche jusqu&rsquo;au premier rallye, le développement a pris un an et demi mais il continue en permanence pour rendre fonctionnelle la voiture</em>« . </p>



<p>Les mêmes limites touchent aussi les opérations de maintenant, limitée à 40 minutes maximum et à 2 assistances par rallye pour les 2 équipages. Si bien qu&rsquo;il faut jongler pour, dans ce temps défini, tout faire&#8230; ou faire le maximum possible pour remettre la voiture d&rsquo;aplomb. Josselyn Gal confirme : <em>« On ne peut pas toucher à la voiture en dehors de ces assistances, avec un nombre de mécanos qui lui aussi est limité tout comme les pièces. Par exemple, on n&rsquo;a que 5 jeux de 4 amortisseurs pour chaque rallye. On ne peut donc pas forcément tout changer, ni en même temps. Mais pour certaines pièces, c&rsquo;est obligatoire : les freins sont changés à chaque assistance, disques et plaquettes. Et en cas de besoin, nos mécanos sont entraînés pour changer en un temps record les pièces : si on le pouvait, on changerait à chaque assistance la boîte de vitesses, on sait le faire en 12 minutes ! »</em></p>



<p>Spécialement conçue pour cette vie, la C3 est étudiée dès le départ pour rendre accessible tous ses composants afin de les changer si besoin. Loin d&rsquo;une C3 de série donc, ce qui se ressent aussi sur son prix, tenu secret, même si l&rsquo;équipe tient à notre que le budget de l&rsquo;écurie est moins consommé par les voitures que par la logistique des déplacements sur chaque rallye. Mais que ne ferait-on pas pour décrocher le titre mondial, mission fixée par Citroën à l&rsquo;équipe WRC ? </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Chaque succès couronne PSA Motorsport</h3>

<p>Derrière 1 C3 WRC, il y a 150 à 200 personnes qui travaillent au département compétition du Groupe PSA, mais tous ne travaillent pas que pour les chevrons. Ces équipes gèrent aussi les programmes de Formule E pour DS Motorsport, de compétition client et par le passé, de WRX pour Peugeot. « <em>Pas mal de compétences sont partagées, et tout le monde est amené à travailler sur chaque projet, même si cela dépend des sujets et de l&rsquo;organisation » </em> confie Josselyn Gal, qui officiait auparavant sur les modèles « client » de 208, C3 et DS 3 de rallye catégories R2 et R5, ainsi que sur les voitures de circuit. Il conclut: <em>« Nous avons des métiers que l&rsquo;on ne trouve nulle part ailleurs, des compétences rares et recherchées dans le monde automobile »</em>.<br></p>



<p>Désormais parée de ses couleurs 2019 et du sponsor Red Bull de Sébastien Ogier, la C3 WRC retrouve un peu du camaïeu rouge/bleu/jaune que l&rsquo;on connaissait à la fin des années 2000 sur la Citroën C4 WRC. Puisse leur destin suivre les traces de cette glorieuse aînée. </p>
