<p>On profite du Salon de New York 2025 pour vous en faire découvrir les voitures exposées. Puisque nous sommes en terrain américain, honorons les hôtes avec une galerie des différentes voitures exposées par les constructeurs locaux !</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New York 2025 : Ford et Lincoln</h2>



<p>Chez Ford, on trouve bien entendu la Mustang, ou plutôt les Mustang, tant la <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/essais/essai-ford-mustang-mach-e-make-america-greta-again/">Mach-e</a> n’a pas grand-chose à voir avec la pony car vendue en parallèle ! On y voit notamment la Mustang RTR vêtue d’une robe de camouflage. Bien entendu, on retrouve des voitures moins fluettes à l’image du tout dernier Expedition, des F-Series, du Bronco ou du Lincoln Navigator.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New York 2025 : Stellantis</h2>



<p>Pour son anniversaire, le stand Chrysler fait pâle figure, l’unique modèle de la gamme actuelle, le Pacifica, est tout juste encadré d’une Chrysler Six de 1924 et du concept car Halcyon, déjà vu… il y a un an ! RAM dispose d’un stand nettement plus fourni, <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/essais/essai-dodge-challenger-r-t-scat-pack-1320-beautiful-beast/">Dodge </a>expose sa nouvelle <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/dodge-charger-2024-daytona/">Charger </a>tandis que les marques européennes de Stellantis commercialisées aux USA sont présentes à l’image de Fiat… avec sa Topolino non vendue aux USA ! Mais aussi Alfa Romeo et Maserati.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lee Iacocca&nbsp;: gravir les échelons de Ford</h2>



<p>Né Lido Anthony Iacocca le 15 octobre 1924 en Pennsylvanie, d’une famille d’origine italienne, il est diplômé de l’université de Princeton. Ingénieur, il rejoint Ford Motor Company en 1946 où il commence à un poste liée à son bagage technique. Il demande rapidement à évoluer en vente et marketing où sa carrière  décolle grâce à d’ingénieux financements proposés aux clients, permettant de booster les ventes de Ford. C’est à cette période qu’il se fait appeler Lee, son nom étant souvent imprononçable. Il gagne ainsi du temps dans son travail lorsqu’il doit se présenter au téléphone&nbsp;! Il est rapidement repéré et est appelé aux quartiers généraux de Dearborn, près de Détroit, où il prend du galon. Dès 1960, âgé de 36 ans, il devient vice-président de la division Ford puis, en 1965, vice-président de la division automobile et utilitaires. Après être de nouveau promu vice-président de Ford Motor Company en 1967, il devient PDG du groupe en 1970. </p>



<p>Lee Iacocca compte de nombreux succès lors de sa carrière chez Ford. Le plus emblématique est bien évidemment la Mustang, première du nom et pony car de référence. Parmi les autres modèles Ford, la Lincoln Continental Mark III ou la Ford Escort sont également d’autres coups d’éclats tandis que Iacocca peut également être crédité de la relance de Mercury dans les années 60 avec des modèles comme la Cougar ou la Marquis tandis que la Comet (initialement prévue pour relancer Edsel) permet d’étendre la gamme vers le bas et de rajeunir la clientèle.</p>

<p>Lee Iacocca perçoit rapidement le besoin de créer une voiture américaine compacte et économique&nbsp;: la Ford Pinto résultera de cette volonté, proposée à moins de 2&nbsp;000 $. Lancée en 1971, la voiture devient l’objet d’une polémique qui devient un cas d’école&nbsp;: la conception du véhicule ne protègerait pas suffisamment ses occupants en cas de choc arrière, le réservoir de carburant, trop exposé, prenant feu. L’origine étant attribuée à un arbitrage économique en conception est dévastateur en termes d’image de marque ainsi que pour les profits de Ford. En 1978, toutes les Pinto produites entre 1971 et 1976 sont rappelées, créant un des premiers scandales industriels médiatisés aux États-Unis. L’histoire est toutefois un peu plus complexe car les essais conduits par l’UCLA étaient réalisés de manière à provoquer un incendie dans le véhicule. Cet épisode n’empêche cependant pas Ford d’enregistrer d’importants profits en 1978 (2 milliards de Dollar).</p>

<p>C’est plutôt la mésentente de Lee Iacocca avec Henry Ford II qui va entraîner la chute de ce premier. Iacocca réfléchit à des projets de véhicules économiques et pousse l’entreprise à aller dans la direction du minivan avec le projet Mini-Max. Des idées qui ne passeront pas à la trappe&nbsp;: rien ne se perd, tout se transforme. En 1978, il est remercié par Ford. Il raconte cet épisode dans ses mémoires en 1984&nbsp;: «&nbsp;j’ai commencé comme fils d’immigrant et ai percé jusqu’à devenir PDG de Ford Motor Company, j’étais au sommet du monde. Mais le destin m’a dit&nbsp;: je n’ai pas fini avec toi&nbsp;: tu vas désormais ressentir ce que ça fait d’être chassé de l’Everest&nbsp;».</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lee Iacocca à la rescousse de Chrysler</h2>



<p>Iacocca ne reste pas longtemps sans occupation&nbsp;: il est recruté par Chrysler Corporation la même année. Le groupe américain perd de l’argent, est contraint de revendre sa filiale européenne à PSA pour dégager du cash et subit les conséquences d’importants rappels sur les Dodge Aspen et Plymouth Volare, deux voitures qui, aux dires de Lee Iacocca, n’auraient même pas dû exister&nbsp;! Il devient dès 1979 PDG de Chrysler et est rejoint par quelques anciens collègues de Ford.</p>

<p>Lee Iacocca prend rapidement conscience que Chrysler ne peut pas survivre sans apport de cash, il convainc le Congrès américain de prêter de l’argent à l’entreprise. Chrysler se doit de donner des garanties de réductions de coût au sein de l’entreprise&nbsp;: le programme de voiture à turbines, initié 20 ans plus tôt et près d’être commercialisé se voit alors abandonné. Chrysler se concentre sur la priorité du moment et les projets de voitures économiques et de minivans initiés sous Ford ressortent du placard. Ces succès vont permettre à Chrysler de rembourser le prêt plus tôt que prévu.</p>

<p>Ainsi, Lee Iacocca est également l’artisan de  projets essentiels pour l’histoire de Chrysler (voire de l’automobile, s’agissant du minivan). Les K-cars que sont les Dodge Aries et Plymouth Reliant, sorties en 1981 tomberont à point nommé dans la récession du début des années 80, la clientèle américaine devenant alors demandeuse de ce type de véhicules, traction avant, économiques et compacts. En 1983, un important jalon est franchi avec le lancement des minivans basés sur cette architecture&nbsp;:  les Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager et Chrysler Town &amp; Country, qui  connaîtront aussi un grand succès européen sous le nom de Chrysler  Voyager. Une appellation récemment relancée, <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/actualites/le-chrysler-voyager-fait-son-grand-retour/">comme nous vous en parlions ici</a>. </p>



<p>Le haut de gamme n’est pas en reste avec le lancement de la Chrysler Imperial, dotée de technologies modernes, mais Iacocca brille surtout en 1987 par le rachat d’American Motors à Renault, alors en prise avec des difficultés économiques en Europe. Si la gamme AMC et les modèles Renault intéressent peu Iacocca, ce dernier perçoit très vite l’intérêt que constituent Jeep et l’ingénierie américaine de Renault (à l’origine des Cherokee ou Premier, notamment). L’ingénieur en chef François Castaing fait partie du Mercato et ce dernier signera de nombreux modèles Chrysler comme la Dodge Viper ou les berlines à cabine avancée des années 90. Le Jeep Grand Cherokee, alors dans les cartons d’AMC sort en 1992 et devient un succès instantané pour Chrysler Corporation.</p>

<p>Lee Iacocca prend alors sa retraite en 1992, après avoir sauvé Chrysler et remis l’entreprise sur les bons rails. Il apparaît dans des campagnes commerciales de Chrysler avec le slogan «&nbsp;The Pride Is Back&nbsp;», ou avec la phrase marquante&nbsp;: «&nbsp;si vous trouvez une meilleure voiture ailleurs, achetez-la&nbsp;». Ce slogan réapparaîtra dans une campagne de 2005 destinée aux ventes au personnel où il apparaît aux côté de Jason Alexander (George Costanza de Seinfeld) et Snoop Dogg&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Citations et œuvres caritatives de Lee Iacocca</h2>



<p>Cette dernière campagne de pub fait l’objet d’un accord entre Iacocca et Daimler-Chrysler&nbsp;: chaque vente génère un dollar de don vers la fondation de Iacocca en faveur de la recherche contre le  diabète. Mary Iacocca, épouse de Lee, est en effet décédée de cette maladie, ce qui a conduit son mari à soutenir la recherche et à la financer par divers biais. Lee Iacocca a également été nommé par Ronald Reagan en 1982 pour diriger la fondation Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island afin de lever des fonds pour la restauration de la fameuse statue et la rénovation d’Ellis Island. Iacocca a continué d’exercer des fonctions au sein de cette fondation jusqu’à son décès hier. </p>



<p>On se souviendra également d’une Mustang hommage réalisée en 2009 et baptisée Ford Mustang Iacocca. Réalisée par le carrossier californien Gaffolio Family Metalcrafters, cette série limitée à 45 exemplaires transfigurait le look de la voiture en faisant un clin d’œil aux premières Mustang Fastback.</p>
