<p><em>Après quatre saisons sous -pratiquement- le même design, les monoplaces de Formule E ont revêtu pour la saison 2018-2019 une toute autre allure. Arrivée du halo en titane, énorme extracteur d&rsquo;air, suppression du grand aileron arrière pour un fuselage en V : ce style, très démonstratif et plus aérodynamique que par le passé, se rapproche de l&rsquo;aéronautique et des avions de chasse. L&rsquo;occasion d&rsquo;y jeter un œil de plus près sur l&rsquo;une des protagonistes, la Jaguar I-Type 3.</em></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">I-Type : court détour onomastique</h2>



<p>Autant le grand public connaît les E-Type ou F-Type, autant l&rsquo;I-Type est une dénomination plus discrète. Et pour cause, lorsque l&rsquo;on parle de Formule E, on parle surtout en périphrase. Ainsi de « la monoplace Jaguar » ou « la Jag&rsquo; de FE ». Remarquez, à peu près toutes les autres monoplaces du sport automobile connaissent le même sort, à l&rsquo;exception peut-être des Ferrari dont certains fans retiennent davantage les intitulés. D&rsquo;ailleurs, comme en Formule E les monoplaces ont toutes la même coque, sachez que celle-ci aussi a un nom : Spark SRT 05E, et un surnom, « Gen 2 « .</p>

<p>I-Type, c&rsquo;est donc le nom des monoplaces de Jaguar en FE et c&rsquo;est aussi un nom assez logique. Rien à voir avec feues les X-Type ou S-Type, c&rsquo;est du côté des années 1950 qu&rsquo;il faut se tourner et de l&rsquo;icône mancelle, la Jaguar D-Type. Une façon pour le félin de Formule E de s&rsquo;inscrire dans ce patrimoine sportif. Et le « I » demanderez-vous ? Pour une voiture électrique, « E-Type » aurait été parfait mais hélas, c&rsquo;est déjà pris (et joliment) si bien que Jaguar a préféré le I en référence au <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/actualites/trois-prix-mondiaux-pour-la-jaguar-i-pace-maintenant-world-car-of-the-year/"><strong>SUV I-Pace</strong></a>, premier modèle 100 % électrique de la marque. Une stratégie qu&rsquo;adopte aussi DS, qui a baptisé sa monoplace <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/actualites/salons/mondial-de-lauto-2018/paris-2018-live-ds-e-tense-fe-19-la-formule-e-de-ds-et-techeetah/"><strong>E-Tense FE 19</strong></a> en référence à sa dénomination commerciale hybride et électrique « E-Tense ».</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Plus longue qu&rsquo;une Jaguar XJ</h2>



<p>Avec 5,16 m de longueur (+16 cm vs I-Type 2), la jaguar I-Type 3 toise la limousine XJ de 3 cm. Enfin, seulement lorsque cette dernière est en châssis court car en LWB, elle passe à 5,25 m et reprend sa couronne. L&rsquo;I-Type est large d&rsquo;1,77 m et hauteur d&rsquo;1,05 m, soit 1 cm de moins que l&rsquo;I-Type 2. Même jeu pour l&#8217;empattement : 3,10 m pour l&rsquo;I-Type soit plus que la XJ « courte » (3,03 m) mais moins que la XJ « longue » (3,16 m). Qu&rsquo;importe : un seul passager est autorisé à bord de cette Formule E dont le poids est de 900 kg, 20 de plus qu&rsquo;avant.</p>



<p>La coque est en carbone, tandis que les jantes sont en magnésium (260 mm à l&rsquo;avant, 305 mm à l&rsquo;arrière), chaussées de Michelin Pilot Sport rainurés quelle que soit la météo (pas de slicks comme en F1). Les freins sont à disques en carbone Brembo, tandis que la batterie est fournie par McLaren Technologies (Li-ion 52 kWh). La puissance moteur est fixée à 200 kW (20 de plus qu&rsquo;avant), avec des pointes à 250 kW (335 ch) sur deux tours maximum.</p>

<p>Le lieu où nous avons découvert de près cette Jaguar I-Type 3 est inattendu pour une monoplace de sport automobile. Il s&rsquo;agit plus précisément du lobby de l&rsquo;hôtel Royal Monceau, où Jaguar l&rsquo;exposait. Une invitée électrique surprenante qui devait toutefois composer avec la présence d’œuvres d&rsquo;art évoquant l&rsquo;automobile thermique, à l&rsquo;image d&rsquo;<em>Il Fascino Ferrari</em>, une oeuvre figurant un moteur Ferrari vendue de 5000 à 25.000 euros. Il est vrai qu&rsquo;à l&rsquo;heure actuelle, représenter un pack de batteries n&rsquo;a pas le même potentiel artistique&#8230; Mais, d&rsquo;ici quelques années, si les fuselages de FE continuent d&rsquo;être démonstratifs, ils pourraient à leur tour inspirer les artistes.</p>

<p>Mais pour l&rsquo;heure, les artistes sont ceux qui sont au volant de la monoplace I-Type 3 : Mitch Evans l&rsquo;australien, 69 points à ce jour, et Alex Lynn le britannique, 4 points à ce jour, auxquels il faut ajouter Nelson Piquet Jr, le premier champion du monde de FE (2015) qui avait débuté la saison mais totalisé qu&rsquo;un seul et unique point. Avec 74 points, Panasonic Jaguar Racing occupe la 8ème place au classement des écuries, loin derrière DS Techeetah et ses 188 points mais guère loin de Venturi, qui totalise 84 points à ce jour.</p>



<p>Prochain rendez-vous pour la Formule E, le 22 juin avec l&rsquo;E-Prix de Berne en Suisse, prélude aux deux ultimes manches organisées les 13 et 14 juillet à New York.</p>
