<p><em>Mai 68&nbsp;: c’est la chienlit, comme dirait le Général. Etudiants, ouvriers, ça manifeste, en général. «&nbsp;Soyez réalistes, demandez l’impossible&nbsp;», scandent les foules. «&nbsp;Bourgeois, vous n’avez rien compris&nbsp;», véhicule une affiche. Et pourtant, l’un d’eux avait eu une sacrée idée. Il a pris «&nbsp;les désirs pour des réalités&nbsp;»… industrielles. En effet, le <a href="https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roland_de_La_Poype" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Comte Roland de la Poype</span></a> est à l’origine d’un véhicule de loisir évoquant irrémédiablement le soleil et la liberté&nbsp;: sous la pavés, la plage&nbsp;? Et pour la plage, la Citroën Méhari. Alors, à l&rsquo;occasion de Rétromobile et pour marquer les 50 ans de la Citroën Méhari, nous vous invitons à redécouvrir l’histoire d’une de celles qui est entrée dans l’Histoire automobile.</em></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="color: #ff9900;">Le plastique, c’est fantastique</span></h2>



<p>Décédé en octobre 2012, le Comte Roland Paulze D&rsquo;Ivoy de la Poype était un industriel français, qui, après avoir quitté l’Armée de l’Air, prit la direction de la Société d’Etudes et d’Applications du Plastique à la fin des années 40. Il établit notamment une importante activité industrielle de plasturgie et devient un des sous-traitants de Citroën, pour qui sa société de thermoformage de plastique (<a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soB2czevQUE" target="_blank"><span style="color: #0000ff;">SEAP</span></a>), produisait notamment les tableaux de bord des DS ainsi que divers éléments d’autres modèles. Avec le designer Jean-Louis Barrault, il développe l’idée de réaliser un véhicule tous chemins et financièrement accessible. C’est ainsi que naquit le concept qui a abouti à la Méhari. </p>

<p>Les contraintes de coût impliquent de reprendre une base technique existante en grande série tandis qu’une carrosserie en ABS teinté est fixée sur un châssis tubulaire, boulonné à la plateforme. Celle de la Citroën Dyane 6 est ainsi retenue. Le moteur, quant à lui, provient de la 2CV6&nbsp;; c’est un bicylindres à plat refroidi par air de 602 ccm aussi bruyant dehors que dedans. Le concept séduit Citroën qui décide de commercialiser le véhicule sous sa marque (puis de le produire dans ses usines). La <strong>Citroën Dyane 6 Méhari</strong>, de son nom complet sort en 1968, son nom évoquant un dromadaire (on en apprend tous les jours).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="color: #ff9900;">La Méhari se heurte à l’Histoire avant d’y entrer</span></h2>



<p>Présentée le 11 mai 1968 sur la plage de Deauville, alors que les contestations estudiantines sont à leur apogée, le lancement de la Méhari passe manifestement inaperçu. La grande grève du 13 mai et l’ampleur sociale des événements n’aidera en rien à la médiatisation du produit. A noter que Citroën est coutumier des lancements éclipsés par&nbsp; l’actualité&nbsp;: la ZX a été présentée en pleine Guerre du Golfe tandis que la première C3 a été révélée un 11 septembre 2001 tandis que les écrans géants des stands du salon de Francfort retransmettaient les images des terribles attentats. La rumeur voudrait que les RG surveillent les lancements Citroën de près… </p>

<p>Plus sérieusement et en dépit de cette présentation pour le moins contrariée, la Méhari est bien un véhicule attendu par le public. Sa simplicité, sa facilité d’entretien, sa carrosserie insensible à la corrosion à une époque où la cataphorèse n’existe pas encore au sein de la production automobile en font de sérieux arguments tandis que sa base technique issue de la 2CV lui autorise de crapahuter sans problème. L’habitacle peut se nettoyer au jet d’eau&nbsp;: que voulez-vous de plus&nbsp;? Un pare-brise rabattable&nbsp;? Vous l’avez&nbsp;!</p>

<p><strong>Produite à 144 953 unités</strong> (dont 9 355 CKD) entre 1968 et 1987, la voiture a connu quelques rares évolutions durant son -long- cycle de vie. La carrosserie change légèrement pour le millésime 1970 afin d’intégrer des feux arrière de Citroën HY, tandis que quelques évolutions apparaissent en 1978&nbsp;: des freins avant à disques accolés à la boîte remplacent les tambours (les freins en sortie de boite de vitesse sont alors assez courant chez Citroën à cette époque). La carrosserie est en ABS, pas les freins… La calandre devient démontable et la direction est retravaillée (adoucie et associée à un volant de plus petit diamètre). L’année suivante, le moteur voit sa puissance augmentée de 12% <em>i.e.</em> elle passe de 26 à 29 chevaux… La Méhari récupère aussi le combiné d’instrumentation de la LN.</p>

<p>La version 4&#215;4 apparaît également en 1979 et, contrairement à la 2CV Sahara, dispose d’un seul moteur et d’un arbre de transmission, Citroën sait aussi opter pour des solutions classiques. Remarquez, la DS5 Hybrid4 est, à sa manière, revenue à la solution des deux moteurs pour créer une transmission intégrale. Comme quoi, il suffit parfois de s’inspirer du passé pour créer de belles innovations&nbsp;! Pour en revenir à la Méhari, celle-ci a également connu une éphémère carrière aux USA&nbsp;: dotée d’une face avant retravaillée afin d’intégrer des feux «&nbsp;sealed beam&nbsp;» obligatoires et d’autres évolutions afférentes à l’homologation locale, la Citroën était classée parmi les trucks, se passait alors de ceintures de sécurité et a connu un petit succès du côté de Hawaï. J’entends par là&nbsp;: 214 exemplaires. Et c&rsquo;est naturellement à&#8230; Prague que j&rsquo;ai vu une version américaine pour la première fois !</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="color: #ff9900;">Méhari, avec un M comme muse</span></h2>



<p>La Méhari a enfin inspiré quelques concurrents. En premier lieu VW et British Leyland qui commercialisèrent respectivement la Type 181 et la Mini Moke. Cette dernière a connu la postérité pour avoir notamment véhiculé <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv813f2Xtrg" target="_blank"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Numéro 6</span></a> dans le Village (Patrick McGoohan dans <a rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6Ffr1U7KMY" target="_blank"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Le Prisonnier</span></a> pour les jeunes incultes qui nous lisent). En suiveur, Renault tentera de s’inspirer de la Méhari en commercialisant les R4, R5 et R6 Rodeo, que l’Histoire a oublié <em>[je te provoque, <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/author/guillaume/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Guillaume</span></a>&nbsp;!]</em>. De l’autre côté du Rideau de Fer, c’est un dérivé de la <a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/culture/collection/essai-ostalgie-trabant-601-universal-47622/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><span style="color: #0000ff;">Trabant 601</span></a> qui est chargée de véhiculer la joie de vivre sous Honecker&nbsp;: la Tramp. Pas super. Avouez que ça devait être bigrement sympa de respirer la fumée du deux temps de la Trabant dans cette version découvrable&#8230; De l’autre côté du Mur, Citroën se heurte à un problème&nbsp;: la Méhari ne parvient pas à franchir le Rhin. Sa carrosserie en ABS est jugée trop dangereuse par le TÜV qui n’homologue pas le véhicule. La Méhari s’embraserait trop rapidement <em>[suffit de ne pas y mettre le feu, non&nbsp;?]</em>. Qu’à cela ne tienne, la filiale allemande de Fiberfab commercialisera un kit en fibre de verre adaptable sur la 2CV&nbsp;: la Sherpa est née et sera commercialisée entre 1975 et 1982. Citroën n’est pas en reste en produisant des dérivés en polyester de la Méhari pour différents marchés&nbsp;: c’est ainsi que les marchés argentins et uruguayens sont servis par une Méhari un peu spéciale produite en Uruguay. Enfin, la Méhari connaîtra également un pendant fait d’emboutis en tôle&nbsp;: la Citroën FAF (Facile A Fabriquer, Facile A Financer) qui accouchera des Jyane iraniennes, Pony grecques et Baby Brousse ivoiriennes. Mais c’est une autre histoire que je vous conterai un autre jour. Plus près de nous, l’importateur français d’Aro transformera l’horrible Aro 10 en… horrible Spartana.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><span style="color: #ff9900;">Une voiture bien dans son époque&nbsp;: notre passé</span></h2>



<p>La Méhari, quant à elle, connaîtra une sorte de descendance avec la C3 Pluriel mais l’inutile complexité de cette dernière <em>[z’avez dit arches démontables&nbsp;?]</em>, la nécessité de coller aux normes des années 2000 et le positionnement malhabile du produit n’en firent pas un succès. Raison suffisante de lui trouver un peu de charme, non&nbsp;? Il faut dire que l’extrême simplicité de la Dyane 6 Méhari qui en faisait tout le génie est antinomique avec la nécessité de coller à la législation actuelle, qu’il s’agisse du choc, de la dépollution ou des attentes de la clientèle en termes de confort. Qu’en reste-t-il aujourd’hui&nbsp;? Différents concepts qui lui ont rendu hommage ou fait des clins d’œil. &nbsp;On peut penser à C-Airplay de 2005, C-Buggy de 2016, le concept Citroën Lacoste de 2010 ainsi que Cactus M de 2015.</p>

<p>Alors comme pour s’excuser de ne plus pouvoir enfanter une descendance aussi simple que l’originale, la Méhari se met au vert par le biais d’une collaboration avec le groupe Bolloré&nbsp;: la Blue Summer, Autolib de plage, se voit recarrossée en Citroën et assemblée à Rennes-la-Jannais. La E-Mehari est née, un peu malgré elle. Mais à défaut de clients, elle capte un certain capital de sympathie et sert de vecteur d’image mêlant écologie et nostalgie du cool. En plus d’abaisser la moyenne d’émissions de CO2 de la gamme.</p>
