<p><em>Avoir 30 ans. Un passage de cap simplement symbolique&nbsp;? Cela va au-delà de ça. Regardez la Mazda MX-5 par exemple, lancée en 1989. La célébration de son anniversaire signifie également cette année son entrée dans le monde de la collection. Déjà&nbsp;! Même si elle n’a pas attendu pour être un «&nbsp;véhicule d’intérêt&nbsp;» idolâtré par des passionnés de toutes générations. Dont celle de votre serviteur, en pleine crise de la trentaine. Nous vous proposons donc un essai nostalgie ponctué de flashbacks, d’images subliminales de consoles 16 bit, sur fonds de ritournelles de «&nbsp;Freed from desire&nbsp;» et de «&nbsp;I like to move it, move it&nbsp;».</em></p>

<p>1989 est une année charnière dans l’Histoire avec un grand H. Le Mur de Berlin vit ses dernières heures et finira par terre en novembre après 38 ans de loyaux (mais pas bons) services. Les Simpsons débarquent un mois plus tard sur les écrans, avec leur peau jaune caractéristique et des dessins encore brouillon. Dans les discothèques, on se trémousse sur la Lambada, tandis que dans la voiture c’est Pump the jam qui donne le rythme et, à la maison, on se laisse aller secrètement sur Like a Prayer de Madonna et Another day in paradise de Phil Collins.</p>

<p>Du côté du Japon, Nintendo lance la Game Boy, première console portable du japonais qui offrira des parties endiablées de Super Mario. Mais c’est à Hiroshima, chez Mazda, que le jouet ultime voit le jour la même année. En février, l’iconique MX-5 est lancée.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Inspiré des roadsters britanniques de MG ou de Triumph, elle en reprend le concept et les grandes lignes tout en s’inscrivant dans la modernité. Ce qui implique des phares escamotables, dont est déjà dotée la Volvo 480, petite GT suédoise en hommage à la P1800 ES mue par des moteurs Turbo de chez Renault.</p>

<p>Mais lorsque les phares «&nbsp;pop-up&nbsp;» sont rabattus, la ligne de la MX-5 est parfaitement fluide, lisse, sans aucune agressivité. Cette simplicité ne l’empêche pas d’être chic&nbsp;: à une époque où les pare-chocs non-peints sont légion, le petit cabriolet (3,97 m de long pour 1,68 de large et 1,24 de haut pour un poids de 955 kg seulement) reçoit uniquement des éléments couleur carrosserie ou chromés&#8230; </p>

<p>Le conducteur déjà attendri par ce détail trop <em>kawaii </em>ouvre la porte et se glisse à bord du petit habitacle. L’amplitude de réglages est réduite au minimum&nbsp;: on peut avancer ou reculer le siège, point. Pourtant de taille moyenne et de petit gabarit (la prise de poids accompagne plutôt le cap de la quarantaine il me semble), les épaules dépassent de chaque côté, à la base de l’appuie-tête intégré.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pas grave, ce n’est pas inconfortable pour autant et surtout la position de conduite est idéale. Et puis au pire il y a les cassettes pour égayer le voyage : Pornography de The Cure, Top Hits 93 et Supertramp, de quoi se plonger dans l’ambiance. C’était sans compter sur l’absence d’autoradio. Tant pis, c’est le Walkman qui prend place dans le rangement dégagé par l’absence de radio-cassette… De toute façon, on n’est pas là pour faire un blind-test.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On est là pour conduire, et la simplicité du tableau de bord poussée à l’extrême le rappelle gentiment. La planche de bord bien lisse aux rebords courbés accueille les aérateurs tout ronds, la console centrale elle aussi en demi-cercle abrite les commandes de chauffage coulissantes, tandis que le combiné d’instrumentation est réduit à un compteur de vitesse, le compte-tours et les témoins d’essence et de température d’huile.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rien à bord pour nous distraire&nbsp;! Sauf peut-être l’emplacement des lève-vitres électriques, situés juste devant l’accoudoir, dans lequel prend place un petit rangement (idéal pour quelques cassettes, d’ailleurs) et le levier d’ouverture de trappe à carburant. Quand l’espace est compté, il faut trouver des solutions originales&nbsp;!</p>

<p>Reste une manipulation à faire avant de partir&nbsp;: décapoter, bien sûr&nbsp;! On déverrouille les crochets de chaque côté, on bascule la capote vers l’arrière, et c’est chose faite. Durée de l’opération&nbsp;: 10 secondes tout au plus. On peut compliquer les choses en couvrant le mécanisme d’une toile prévue à cet effet. Mais avec 8 pressions à clipser, c’est aussi rapide qu’enfantin. D’ailleurs, notre âme d’enfant a très envie d’aller enfin s’amuser. On visse la casquette Mammouth sur la tête, et go&nbsp;!</p>

<p>Un tour de clé, et le 1.6 s’éveille dans un bourdonnement de frelon asiatique, accentué par le ralenti dépassant les 1 000 tours / minutes, une particularité amusante. Joie, bonheur et allégresse. Comment ai-je pu dénigrer cette auto&nbsp;? Trop lisse de l’extérieur, c’est tout l’inverse qui frappe derrière le volant.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prem…oh…première&nbsp;! Ce levier ne se laisse pas faire, il faut l’empoigner fermement pour lui faire parcourir sa course ultra-courte. De bon augure pour la suite&nbsp;! Et l’euphorie est à son comble au premier coup de volant. Réactivité, vivacité… La Mazda MX-5 se comporte comme un jack russel à qui on va lancer une balle&nbsp;! Avec les mêmes sautillements, sur les petits raccords de chaussée et autres stigmates d’asphalte.</p>

<p>Plus les kilomètres s’enchaînent et plus on se dit qu’il sera impossible de faire mieux dans le futur. De toute façon en l&rsquo;an 2000 les voitures voleront, ça n’aura plus rien à voir. Même si on n’est pas collé au siège par les 115 ch, c’est aussi addictif qu’une partie de Tetris&nbsp;!</p>



<p>On prend tellement de plaisir qu’on fait aussi abstraction de l’insonorisation légère, surtout en roulant décapoté…ce qui a été le cas les trois quarts du temps. Le K-WAY était sur le siège passager au cas où, mais il est resté tranquillement en position «&nbsp;boule&nbsp;» pendant l’essai.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Propulsion oblige, on y va modérément en sortie de rond-point et sur sol mouillé, mais une fois aligné à la route, la MX-5 ne demande qu’à monter dans les tours pour nous offrir un plaisir exponentiel à sa vitesse. Mais même sans rouler vite, la joie est de toute façon décuplée par la position basse et la légèreté de la puce.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Les sensations sont là à toutes allures, et c’est là tout le secret de la japonaise&nbsp;! C’est même sans doute le remède ultime contre l’ennui au volant dans un cadre tout à fait légal&nbsp;! Édouard Balladur et son fameux&nbsp;«&nbsp;Je vous demande de vous arrêter&nbsp;!» ne pourraient rien y faire, quand on est lancé, on a juste envie que la balade dure (attention jeu de mot) éternellement.</p>

<p>Revenons dans le présent…mais pas tout à fait, puisque c’est à un rassemblement de voitures principalement anciennes que nous nous rendons. <p>S’ensuivent des variantes («&nbsp;j’ai la même&nbsp;!&nbsp;» / «&nbsp;j’ai eu la même&nbsp;» / «&nbsp;j’aimerais bien avoir la même&nbsp;»…) avec un point commun dans tous les cas&nbsp;: les yeux qui pétillent et les cordes vocales brûlantes de la flamme de la passion.</p>

<p>Du haut de ses 30 balais (d’essuie-glace, hahahaha), la Miata passe du statut de «&nbsp;youngtimer&nbsp;» à celui de «&nbsp;véhicule de collection&nbsp;», et ce de façon officielle, avec la mention sur la carte grise et les plaques SIV noir et argent. Mais au fond, qu’est-ce qu’une voiture de collection&nbsp;? Si c’est une voiture exceptionnelle par son concept, son design et le plaisir de conduite qu’elle procure, cela fait un moment que la MX-5 fait partie de ces autos de passionnés. En témoigne le club Mazda MX-5, qui nous a servi au dernier Grand Prix de l’Âge d’Or (où nous nous sommes rendus avec une autre japonaise charismatique, le<a href="https://lenouvelautomobiliste.fr/essais/essai-suzuki-jimny-1-5-vvt-102-ch-pack-la-tete-au-carre/31630/"> Suzuki Jimny</a>) une parade impressionnante par le nombre d’autos réunies de toutes générations… Et par l’enthousiasme de leurs conducteurs&nbsp;!</p>

<p>Vous êtes tentés par l’achat d’une MX-5 NA mais vous n’avez pas les 6-7 000 euros de budget (environ) pour vous en procurer une en excellent état&nbsp;? L’usage que vous avez de votre auto vous contraint à rouler en moderne&nbsp;? Vous ne pouvez convaincre votre moitié d’acquérir une auto de collection sans risquer le divorce (faites-lui quand même essayer la NA, ça devrait changer la donne)&nbsp;? Bonne nouvelle, Mazda produit toujours la MX-5, moderne, efficace, belle et cette fois-ci bien équipée. Et encore mieux, les sensations de conduite sont restées intactes&nbsp;! <p>30 ans, c’est l’âge où on regarde derrière soi mais aussi ce qu’il reste du passé, ce qui est immuable, ce sur quoi on s’est construit et ce qui fait partie de notre ADN. On a assez de recul pour dire ce qu’on vaut, pour connaître ses qualités et accepter ses faiblesses. On s’est enfin trouvé. On a mûri. On a changé, oui, on s’habille à la mode de son époque et on sait se montrer sérieux. Mais au fond, on est toujours animé par la recherche de bonheur, de sensations, d’amusement. Tout cela s’applique aussi bien à un essayeur qui vient de souffler ses 30 bougies qu’à un modèle qui a traversé les décennies (avec plus de succès et moins de rides, il faut l’avouer). La Mazda MX-5, c’est un héritage, une personnalité unique qui a perduré, s’est transformée sans perdre une once de ses qualités intrinsèques. On regarde aujourd’hui la NA avec des yeux différents. Pas parce que c’est une vieille chose, mais par ce qu’elle évoque d’une époque, d’un état d’esprit, d’envies et de passion. Le plaisir de conduite n’est pas mort, et il est tout entier synthétisé dans la Mazda MX-5&nbsp;!</p>
